IRL Bremen

The department of communications engineering at the University of Bremen is experienced in research of communications systems, algorithms and signal processing for years.

By participating in DFG and BMBF programs, EU projects and collaborations with industry, results from fundamental research find their direct application in the development and standardization of mobile communication systems (5G) and wireless sensor networks.

The department is a member of the alliance 5G-ACIA, the VDE/ITG-Fachgruppe 5 (committee of experts), the “Fachausschuss 5.1” (professional group), the EU platform Networld2020 and the ETSI.

The long-time experience with industry and the expertise from participating int the BMBF program “Zuverlässige drahtlose Kommunikation in der Industrie” (Reliable wireless communication for industry) are transferred to the IRL Bremen.

Research Topics

The IRL Bremen mainly focuses on the research and development of industrial wireless solutions for production and operation in the fields of aeronautics, logistics, health, automation, etc. with the following key aspects:

  • Interconnection of satellite and terrestrial communications systems such as 5G
  • Artificial intelligence in communications systems
  • Co-design of communication and control for industrial applications, including the integration of wireless communications in industrial control systems and development of base band technologies of the physical layer for industrial radio applications, which comprises coding, wave form design and modulation
  • Coexistence management and spectrum monitoring mechanisms
